Sackville Fire Department History In the late 60s and early 70s, there was a great influx of volunteers. At one time the number reached 80 volunteers. More paid firefighters were hired - all from the ranks of the volunteers. During 1975, the third expansion was done to the station. This added sleeping quarters and offices since the career staff manned the station for 24 hours. It was in this time period that an ambulance service was started and manned by fire department personnel. With more area growth, a sub-station was needed. A second station was built at the corner of #1 Highway and Old Patton Road.During the 80s and 90s, home construction grew in leaps and bounds. The Sackville Fire Department grew with it, expanding to water rescue capability, a Fire Prevention Division and a Training Division. At this time the Sackville Volunteer Firefighters Organization was formed. The early 90s saw the construction of two new fire stations and the closing of the Beaverbank Road station. New stations were located at Metropolitan Avenue and Sackville Drive in the Millwood area. With the amalgamation of Halifax County communities in 1996, Sackville Fire Department became part of Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service. |
